Starting from stone cold - choke or not ?

Post by hollo »

Hello ,
As per my long running starting issues , I'm just wondering how other people start their bike from stone cold .
The dyno shop I've just used , did not use the choke at all , and it started OK , where as I used 100% choke and no throttle from stone cold . I do not know if this caused my plugs to get dirty or not.
How do you start your 45 from stone cold ?

Thanks
Mike

Choke

I have never used the choke, when I have it's actually harder to start! My procedure for starting is to crank the engine and no throttle, it may kick on a couple of cylinders but not catch on all 4, I then try again, this usually happens a few times but then it catches on all 4 cylinders, as soon as it does I do not touch the throttle or it stalls so I let it just idle over by itself for about 10-20 seconds, then I slowly open the throttle and warm it up ready to ride.

If the engine is already warm it kicks straight away and runs fine, it's just cold starts that are a bit shitty, my old NC30 was the same(obviously carb and not efi)

Over the years I have talked to a number of 45 owners and they generally start the same way.
