Smokin'

Post by CRM »

I guess one or two of you have seen the clip of my RC on youtube, and yet again on a dyno it smokes like a goodun and quite frankly it scares the living daylights out of me.
Everyone seems to think not to worry, so long as its got oil in it it will be fine, but it just seems un natural to me not to worry when it belches smoke out on the overrun on a dyno. however on the road there is nothing, you cant even smell anything when behind it either. no smoke on startup so cant be that whipped.
i keep the oil on the max or slightly above, and now pretty well chuck a bit extra in to be sure. a rule of thumb i prob put in 50 - 100ml every couple of hundred miles of riding. now bear in mind its road riding and not at the red line all day.
I guess this is around the same as any R1 or TRX owner is used too, but is that excessive ?

oil levels.

Post by smithyrc30 »

Hi, my first RC I kept at around or slightly above the max mark on the stick. It used oil at the rate of about a half litre every 600~700miles or so. I was a bit paranoid about the levels having heard they used oil. (The dealer I bought it off told e that this was the only way to keep it alive).

However having seen where the crank throw ends p , it occurred to me that there was too much in the sump., and that even with the oil retained around the engine there was sufficient flow back to the sump fr the crank to be hitting the oil as it returned.

I now run it (well I did while I was in the UK!) with the level about the half way mark, and the consumption of oil has fallen to about a half litre every 1200~1300miles. The motor has 24,000miles on it.

It seems quite healthy, bone stock it pushed out 108rwhp on the dyno.
