RC30 regulator rectifier

Post by smiler »

I got home from a run on my 30 and noticed a hot electrical smell from under the seat. I checked the plugs from the regulator rectifier and the plug from the alternator [with yellow wires ] had run hot, causing the wires to look a rusty colour.
Does this mean a replacement unit ?
Are there good aftermarket units available ?
Is there any thing else that I should check ?

Thanks in advance

Very common problem. Can even start a small fire. Honda make a repair kit that comes with new wires, connector, and some heatshrink tubing. You'll need to do a bit of soldering but nothing too taxing.

The yellow wires always run a bit warm but over time the heat seems to affect the connector, which then gains resistance and then runs even hotter.

There are a couple of aftermarket reg/rec units available as well if you want to replace that, although unusually for Honda reg/recs I've not had one fail on an RC30.

Kit to replace connector is-
