Performance Bikes RC30

Post by DocJohn »

Now then chaps,

Over the coming few weeks /months I plan to de-moth ball a friends RC30, which has been laid up for... oh, I'm sure 7 years or more.

All helpful tips on these lovely bikes are gratefully accepted!

The plan is, so far, to get it back up and running; have all refreshed, and then set-up by Phillip McCallen
It already has an rc45 wheel in the rear, so at least I can use modern rubber from the start; and I'm hoping to track down a ride height adjuster.

Ultimately, if all goes to plan, I'd like to run it out at the back of a (modern) 750 road race and see how the old girl fares!

I'm picking the bike up tomorrow so should have some "spoiler" pictures over then next while.

Watch this space!
First planned shakedown is the Irish Superbikes 2 day test at the start of March

ps. Has anyone any experience of rebuilding the standard shock in the RC30 as an alternative to an aftermarket one?

tyres

Post by arsey30 »

I have been looking at the 18" tyres for a couple of friends recently.
Not much in 18" and not much in 170 either 17" or 18".

Some 180s won't clear the swinging arm, so I have used 1.2, 2.4 or 3mm spacers in the past with no problems.
I try to avoid the spacer as it means less drive pin engagement in the wheel/hub, [or new longer pins] and the wheel nut and/or nut spacer needs to be modified too.

However, the 180 x 17 Supercorsa pro is 178mm and clears the s/a when fitted to a 5.5" rim, and is one of the slimmest I think.
For road use on 18" rim there is little to choose from, a 170 is available in the US, the Dunlop Roadsmart, only the 160 is sold here.

Good luck, let me know what you find in 18" as friends may need one.

The best bet is 5.5 x 17 wheel, then plenty 180s available, just check the spec for actual width first.
Dave.

Thanks for that Dave, I'll try the Supercorsa 180 rear first then, since I have some in the garage anyway, and take it from there.

I'm not sure road rubber is going to be up to the job - best mentioned so far seems to be the Dunlop "Harley V-rod" spec stuff; which I reckon might be a bit frightening at race speed!

...and marveling at how someone ever managed to ride the bloody thing with about a foot-and-a-half of throttle freeplay!
